Suitability of the product/service range for the market

Air Pollution in most Kenyan cities is hovering at a severely high level for the past decade or so. A lot of studies have been done, solutions proposed but very little improvement at ground level. This has resulted in a spike in respiratory ailments across the country – from young children to the aged population. Air Purifiers still haven’t penetrated when you compare it with other protective gadgets like water purifiers. So, there is a market to be harnessed due to limited competition. The Industrial Air Purifier market seems a bit more crowded. A first search threw up many names that sounded both Kenyan and non Kenyan (please note this is a first impression from our side, not based on quantitative research)
Publicly available data on market size

The market for domestic air purifiers only just picked up a year or two ago. Until then air purifiers in the household segment were unheard of. Unconfirmed sources tell me that the market size is about 25-30 million Euros but growing at an astounding rate of 40-45% CGPA. Of course, it can be argued that this is easy since it comes off a low base.
Possible distribution channels

Distribution would mostly be through a broad range of household appliances shops, and to a far lesser extent through the internet. (further research should turn out which of these distribution channels would be suitable/receptive for your offering)
Potential competition and their price range

Amongst the market players, most common names are Philips & Sharp followed by Kenyan appliances companies . Like with anything in Kenya, price is always a key factor. The good thing is the average cost of an air purifier is still high in Kenya (Euro 100 and above) due to low volumes. This means that the client can get in if they price their products intelligently and offer value to the customers. (please note that these are examples of competitors, not the full list of competitors)
General recommendations

The business model is important. The current sellers have their own local operations. I don’t suppose the client would like to set up a company in Kenya; they probably want to deal with distributors/agents, which is okay given limited volumes.
